In 2004, with a shoestring budget, Rene wrote and directed the romantic comedy Siete mujeres, un homosexual y Carlos. The film was shot on 35mm in Tijuana and starred Mauricio Ochmann, Adriana Fonseca, Luis Felipe Tovar, and Rogelio Guerra. It was distributed in Mexico by 20th Century Fox and became the fourth-highest-grossing Mexican film of the year.
In 2009, his film Recién Cazado—released by Warner Bros. Pictures—became an audience favorite in Mexico, selling nearly one million tickets and grossing almost 40 million pesos. It ranked second at the Mexican box office and became the number-one DVD nationwide in 2010. Featuring a star-studded cast that included Jaime Camil, Gabriela Vergara, Otto Sirgo, and Angélica Aragón, the film has been licensed once by HBO and three times by Netflix to date.
Most recently, he completed the short film Cara a Cara, which became an official selection at the Morelia International Film Festival, the most prestigious film festival in Mexico.
In 2018, Lo más sencillo es complicarlo todo premiered in theaters. As with his previous films—written, produced, and directed by Rene—it once again reached the top 10 at the Mexican box office and is currently streaming worldwide on Netflix.
Rene’s drama Tijuana I Love You, composed of seven stories inspired by the seven deadly sins and set in Tijuana, was an official selection at 28 film festivals around the world, including Toronto, Barcelona, London, and Amsterdam. It is now being broadcast on the CineLatino Network in the United States and Latin America.
Cuando te toca, a comedy co-produced with the Dominican Republic, had its theatrical release in early 2025.
Also released theatrically in 2025 was Lo que dice el corazón, a drama about a father and his autistic son.
Amor a fuego lento followed, a romantic drama produced for Canela TV.
Rene presides over two production companies—Second Try Film in the United States and HISPANA de Producción in Mexico—so, beyond being the creative force behind his projects, he also assembles and oversees all the elements needed from beginning to end.
Rene currently has several high-profile projects in development, including Dios nunca se equivoca; the historical biographical drama Juana de Asbaje; the comedies Honeymoon in Tijuana and How to Catch a Millionaire; the drama Saber de ti; and multiple series.
If you’d like, I can also create a shorter bio, a festival-oriented version, a press-kit version, or a Spanish version.
